2. "Execute vengeance for the Israelites against the Midianites. After that, you will be gathered to your people."

2. Avenge H5358 H5360 the children H1121 of Israel H3478 of H4480 H854 the Midianites H4084 : afterward H310 shalt thou be gathered H622 unto H413 thy people H5971 .
|
|
3. So Moses spoke to the people, "Equip some of your men for war. They will go against Midian to inflict the LORD's vengeance on them.
|
3. And Moses H4872 spoke H1696 unto H413 the people H5971 , saying H559 , Arm H2502 some H376 of yourselves H4480 H854 unto the war H6635 , and let them go H1961 against H5921 the Midianites H4080 , and avenge H5414 H5360 the LORD H3068 of Midian H4080 .

4. Send 1,000 men to war from each Israelite tribe."
|
4. Of every tribe a thousand H4294 H505 H4294 H505 , throughout all H3605 the tribes H4294 of Israel H3478 , shall ye send H7971 to the war H6635 .
|
|
5. So 1,000 were recruited from each Israelite tribe out of the thousands in Israel-- 12,000 equipped for war.
|
5. So there were delivered H4560 out of the thousands H4480 H505 of Israel H3478 , a thousand H505 of every tribe H4294 , twelve H8147 H6240 thousand H505 armed H2502 for war H6635 .
|
|
6. Moses sent 1,000 from each tribe to war. They went with Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest, in whose care were the holy objects and signal trumpets.
|
6. And Moses H4872 sent H7971 them to the war H6635 , a thousand H505 of every tribe H4294 them , and Phinehas H6372 the son H1121 of Eleazar H499 the priest H3548 , to the war H6635 , with the holy H6944 instruments H3627 , and the trumpets H2689 to blow H8643 in his hand H3027 .

7. They waged war against Midian, as the LORD had commanded Moses, and killed every male.
|
7. And they warred H6633 against H5921 the Midianites H4080 , as H834 the LORD H3068 commanded H6680 H853 Moses H4872 ; and they slew H2026 all H3605 the males H2145 .
|
|
8. Along with the others slain by them, they killed the Midianite kings-- Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, the five kings of Midian. They also killed Balaam son of Beor with the sword.
|
8. And they slew H2026 the kings H4428 of Midian H4080 , beside H5921 the rest of them that were slain H2491 ; namely , H853 Evi H189 , and Rekem H7552 , and Zur H6698 , and Hur H2354 , and Reba H7254 , five H2568 kings H4428 of Midian H4080 : Balaam H1109 also the son H1121 of Beor H1160 they slew H2026 with the sword H2719 .

9. The Israelites took the Midianite women and their children captive, and they plundered all their cattle, flocks, and property.
|
9. And the children H1121 of Israel H3478 took all H853 the women H802 of Midian H4080 captives H7617 , and their little ones H2945 , and took the spoil H962 of all H3605 their cattle H929 , and all H3605 their flocks H4735 , and all H3605 their goods H2428 .
|
|
10. Then they burned all the cities where the Midianites lived, as well as all their encampments,
|
10. And they burnt H8313 all H3605 their cities H5892 wherein they dwelt H4186 , and all H3605 their goodly castles H2918 , with fire H784 .
|
|
11. and took away all the spoils of war and the captives, both human and animal.
|
11. And they took H3947 H853 all H3605 the spoil H7998 , and all H3605 the prey H4455 , both of men H120 and of beasts H929 .
|
|
12. They brought the prisoners, animals, and spoils of war to Moses, Eleazar the priest, and the Israelite community at the camp on the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho.
|
12. And they brought H935 H853 the captives H7628 , and the prey H4455 , and the spoil H7998 , unto H413 Moses H4872 , and Eleazar H499 the priest H3548 , and unto H413 the congregation H5712 of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 , unto H413 the camp H4264 at H413 the plains H6160 of Moab H4124 , which H834 are by H5921 Jordan H3383 near Jericho H3405 .

13. Moses, Eleazar the priest, and all the leaders of the community went to meet them outside the camp.
|
13. And Moses H4872 , and Eleazar H499 the priest H3548 , and all H3605 the princes H5387 of the congregation H5712 , went forth H3318 to meet H7125 them without H413 H4480 H2351 the camp H4264 .
|
|
14. But Moses became furious with the officers, the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, who were returning from the military campaign.
|
14. And Moses H4872 was wroth H7107 with H5921 the officers H6485 of the host H2428 , with the captains H8269 over thousands H505 , and captains H8269 over hundreds H3967 , which came H935 from the battle H4480 H6635 H4421 .
|
|
15. "Have you let every female live?" he asked them.
|
15. And Moses H4872 said H559 unto H413 them , Have ye saved all the women alive H2421 H3605 H5347 ?
|
|
16. "Yet they are the ones who, at Balaam's advice, incited the Israelites to unfaithfulness against the LORD in the Peor incident, so that the plague came against the LORD's community.
|
16. Behold H2005 , these H2007 caused H1961 the children H1121 of Israel H3478 , through the counsel H1697 of Balaam H1109 , to commit H4560 trespass H4604 against the LORD H3068 in H5921 the matter H1697 of Peor H6465 , and there was H1961 a plague H4046 among the congregation H5712 of the LORD H3068 .

17. So now, kill all the male children and kill every woman who has had sexual relations with a man,
|
17. Now H6258 therefore kill H2026 every H3605 male H2145 among the little ones H2945 , and kill H2026 every H3605 woman H802 that hath known H3045 man H376 by lying H4904 with him H2145 .
|
|
18. but keep alive for yourselves all the young females who have not had sexual relations.
|
18. But all H3605 the women H802 children H2945 , that H834 have not H3808 known H3045 a man H2145 by lying H4904 with him , keep alive H2421 for yourselves.
|
|
19. "You are to remain outside the camp for seven days. All of you and your prisoners who have killed a person or touched the dead are to purify yourselves on the third day and the seventh day.
|
19. And do ye H859 abide H2583 without H4480 H2351 the camp H4264 seven H7651 days H3117 : whosoever H3605 hath killed H2026 any person H5315 , and whosoever H3605 hath touched H5060 any slain H2491 , purify H2398 both yourselves H859 and your captives H7628 on the third H7992 day H3117 , and on the seventh H7637 day H3117 .

20. Also purify everything: garments, leather goods, things made of goat hair, and every article of wood."

20. And purify H2398 all H3605 your raiment H899 , and all H3605 that is made H3627 of skins H5785 , and all H3605 work H4639 of goats' H5795 hair , and all H3605 things H3627 made of wood H6086 .

|
21. Then Eleazar the priest said to the soldiers who had gone to battle, "This is the legal statute the LORD commanded Moses:
|
21. And Eleazar H499 the priest H3548 said H559 unto H413 the men H376 of war H6635 which went H935 to the battle H4421 , This H2063 is the ordinance H2708 of the law H8451 which H834 the LORD H3068 commanded H6680 H853 Moses H4872 ;

|
22. Only the gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin, and lead--
|
22. Only H389 H853 the gold H2091 , and the silver H3701 , H853 the brass H5178 , H853 the iron H1270 , H853 the tin H913 , and the lead H5777 ,
|
|
23. everything that can withstand fire-- put through fire, and it will be clean. It must still be purified with the purification water. Anything that cannot withstand fire, put through the water.
|
23. Every H3605 thing H1697 that H834 may abide H935 the fire H784 , ye shall make it go H5674 through the fire H784 , and it shall be clean H2891 : nevertheless H389 it shall be purified H2398 with the water H4325 of separation H5079 : and all H3605 that H834 abideth H935 not H3808 the fire H784 ye shall make go H5674 through the water H4325 .

24. On the seventh day wash your clothes, and you will be clean. After that you may enter the camp."
|
24. And ye shall wash H3526 your clothes H899 on the seventh H7637 day H3117 , and ye shall be clean H2891 , and afterward H310 ye shall come H935 into H413 the camp H4264 .
|
|
25. The LORD told Moses,
|
25. And the LORD H3068 spoke H559 unto H413 Moses H4872 , saying H559 ,
|
|
26. "You, Eleazar the priest, and the family leaders of the community are to take a count of what was captured, human and animal.
|
26. Take H5375 H853 the sum H7218 of the prey H4455 that was taken H7628 , both of man H120 and of beast H929 , thou H859 , and Eleazar H499 the priest H3548 , and the chief H7218 fathers H1 of the congregation H5712 :
|
|
27. Then divide the captives between the troops who went out to war and the entire community.
|
27. And divide H2673 H853 the prey H4455 into two parts; between H996 them that took H8610 the war H4421 upon them , who went out H3318 to battle H6635 , and between H996 all H3605 the congregation H5712 :
|
|
28. Set aside a tribute for the LORD from what belongs to the fighting men who went out to war: one out of every 500 humans, cattle, donkeys, sheep, and goats.
|
28. And levy H7311 a tribute H4371 unto the LORD H3068 of H4480 H854 the men H376 of war H4421 which went out H3318 to battle H6635 : one H259 soul H5315 of five H4480 H2568 hundred H3967 , both of H4480 the persons H120 , and of H4480 the beefs H1241 , and of H4480 the asses H2543 , and of H4480 the sheep H6629 :

29. Take the tribute from their half and give it to Eleazar the priest as a contribution to the LORD.
|
29. Take H3947 it of their half H4480 H4276 , and give H5414 it unto Eleazar H499 the priest H3548 , for a heave offering H8641 of the LORD H3068 .
|
|
30. From the Israelites' half, take one out of every 50 from the people, cattle, donkeys, sheep, and goats, all the livestock, and give them to the Levites who perform the duties of the LORD's tabernacle."
|
30. And of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 's half H4480 H4276 , thou shalt take H3947 one H259 portion H270 of H4480 fifty H2572 , of H4480 the persons H120 , of H4480 the beefs H1241 , of H4480 the asses H2543 , and of H4480 the flocks H6629 , of all manner H4480 H3605 of beasts H929 , and give H5414 them unto the Levites H3881 , which keep H8104 the charge H4931 of the tabernacle H4908 of the LORD H3068 .

31. So Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the LORD commanded Moses.
|
31. And Moses H4872 and Eleazar H499 the priest H3548 did H6213 as H834 the LORD H3068 commanded H6680 H853 Moses H4872 .
|
|
32. The captives remaining from the plunder the army had taken totaled: 675,000 sheep and goats,
|
32. And the booty H4455 , being the rest H3499 of the prey H957 which H834 the men H5971 of war H6635 had caught H962 , was H1961 six H8337 hundred H3967 thousand H505 and seventy H7657 thousand H505 and five H2568 thousand H505 sheep H6629 ,
|
|
33. 72,000 cattle,
|
33. And threescore and twelve H8147 H7657 thousand H505 beefs H1241 ,
|
|
34. 61,000 donkeys,
|
34. And threescore H8346 and one H259 thousand H505 asses H2543 ,
|
|
35. and 32,000 people, all the females who had not had sexual relations with a man.
|
35. And thirty H7970 and two H8147 thousand H505 persons H5315 H120 in all H3605 H5315 , of H4480 women H802 that H834 had not H3808 known H3045 man by lying with H4904 him H2145 .
|
|
36. The half portion for those who went out to war numbered: 337,500 sheep and goats,
|
36. And the half H4275 , which was the portion H2506 of them that went out H3318 to war H6635 , was H1961 in number H4557 three H7969 hundred H3967 thousand H505 and seven H7651 and thirty H7970 thousand H505 and five H2568 hundred H3967 sheep H6629 :

|
37. and the tribute to the LORD was 675 from the sheep and goats;
|
37. And the LORD H3068 's tribute H4371 of H4480 the sheep H6629 was H1961 six H8337 hundred H3967 and threescore and fifteen H2568 H7657 .
|
|
38. from the 36,000 cattle, the tribute to the LORD was 72;
|
38. And the beefs H1241 were thirty H7970 and six H8337 thousand H505 ; of which the LORD H3068 's tribute H4371 was threescore and twelve H8147 H7657 .
|
|
39. from the 30,500 donkeys, the tribute to the LORD was 61;
|
39. And the asses H2543 were thirty H7970 thousand H505 and five H2568 hundred H3967 ; of which the LORD H3068 's tribute H4371 was threescore H8346 and one H259 .
|
|
40. and from the 16,000 people, the tribute to the LORD was 32 people.
|
40. And the persons H5315 H120 were sixteen H8337 H6240 thousand H505 ; of which the LORD H3068 's tribute H4371 was thirty H7970 and two H8147 persons H5315 .
|
|
41. Moses gave the tribute to Eleazar the priest as a contribution for the LORD, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
|
41. And Moses H4872 gave H5414 H853 the tribute H4371 , which was the LORD H3068 's heave offering H8641 , unto Eleazar H499 the priest H3548 , as H834 the LORD H3068 commanded H6680 H853 Moses H4872 .
|
|
42. From the Israelites' half, which Moses separated from the men who fought,
|
42. And of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 's half H4480 H4276 , which H834 Moses H4872 divided H2673 from H4480 the men H376 that warred H6633 ,
|
|
43. the community's half was: 337,500 sheep and goats,
|
43. (Now the half H4275 that pertained unto the congregation H5712 was H1961 three H7969 hundred H3967 thousand H505 and thirty H7970 thousand H505 and seven H7651 thousand H505 and five H2568 hundred H3967 sheep H6629 ,
|
|
44. 36,000 cattle,
|
44. And thirty H7970 and six H8337 thousand H505 beefs H1241 ,
|
|
45. 30,500 donkeys,
|
45. And thirty H7970 thousand H505 asses H2543 and five H2568 hundred H3967 ,
|
|
46. and 16,000 people.
|
46. And sixteen H8337 H6240 thousand H505 persons H5315 H120 ;)
|
|
47. Moses took one out of every 50, selected from the people and the livestock from the Israelites' half. He gave them to the Levites who perform the duties of the LORD's tabernacle, as the LORD had commanded him.
|
47. Even of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 's half H4480 H4276 , Moses H4872 took H3947 one H259 H853 portion H270 of H4480 fifty H2572 , both of H4480 man H120 and of H4480 beast H929 , and gave H5414 them unto the Levites H3881 , which kept H8104 the charge H4931 of the tabernacle H4908 of the LORD H3068 ; as H834 the LORD H3068 commanded H6680 H853 Moses H4872 .

48. The officers who were over the thousands of the army, the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, approached Moses
|
48. And the officers H6485 which H834 were over thousands H505 of the host H6635 , the captains H8269 of thousands H505 , and captains H8269 of hundreds H3967 , came near H7126 unto H413 Moses H4872 :
|
|
49. and told him, "Your servants have taken a census of the fighting men under our command, and not one of us is missing.
|
49. And they said H559 unto H413 Moses H4872 , Thy servants H5650 have taken H5375 H853 the sum H7218 of the men H376 of war H4421 which H834 are under our charge H3027 , and there lacketh H6485 not H3808 one man H376 of H4480 us.
|
|
50. So we have presented to the LORD an offering of the gold articles each man found-- armlets, bracelets, rings, earrings, and necklaces-- to make atonement for ourselves before the LORD."
|
50. We have therefore brought H7126 H853 an oblation H7133 for the LORD H3068 , what H834 every man H376 hath gotten H4672 , of jewels H3627 of gold H2091 , chains H685 , and bracelets H6781 , rings H2885 , earrings H5694 , and tablets H3558 , to make an atonement H3722 for H5921 our souls H5315 before H6440 the LORD H3068 .

51. Moses and Eleazar the priest received from them all the articles made out of gold.
|
51. And Moses H4872 and Eleazar H499 the priest H3548 took H3947 H853 the gold H2091 of H4480 H854 them, even all H3605 wrought H4639 jewels H3627 .
|
|
52. All the gold of the contribution they offered to the Lord, from the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, was 420 pounds.
|
52. And all H3605 the gold H2091 of the offering H8641 that H834 they offered up H7311 to the LORD H3068 , of H4480 H854 the captains H8269 of thousands H505 , and of H4480 H854 the captains H8269 of hundreds H3967 , was H1961 sixteen H8337 H6240 thousand H505 seven H7651 hundred H3967 and fifty H2572 shekels H8255 .

53. Each of the soldiers had taken plunder for himself.
|
53. (For the men H376 of war H6635 had taken spoil H962 , every man H376 for himself.)

|
54. Moses and Eleazar the priest received the gold from the commanders of thousands and of hundreds and brought it into the tent of meeting as a memorial for the Israelites before the LORD.
|
54. And Moses H4872 and Eleazar H499 the priest H3548 took H3947 H853 the gold H2091 of H4480 H854 the captains H8269 of thousands H505 and of hundreds H3967 , and brought H935 it into H413 the tabernacle H168 of the congregation H4150 , for a memorial H2146 for the children H1121 of Israel H3478 before H6440 the LORD H3068 .
