Exodus 21:1 (NET) New English Translation

1 "These are the decisions that you will set before them:
2 "If you buy a Hebrew servant, he is to serve you for six years, but in the seventh year he will go out free without paying anything.
3 If he came in by himself he will go out by himself; if he had a wife when he came in, then his wife will go out with him.
4 If his master gave him a wife, and she bore sons or daughters, the wife and the children will belong to her master, and he will go out by himself.
5 But if the servant should declare, 'I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free,'
6 then his master must bring him to the judges, and he will bring him to the door or the doorposts, and his master will pierce his ear with an awl, and he shall serve him forever.
7 "If a man sells his daughter as a female servant, she will not go out as the male servants do.
8 If she does not please her master, who has designated her for himself, then he must let her be redeemed. He has no right to sell her to a foreign nation, because he has dealt deceitfully with her.
9 If he designated her for his son, then he will deal with her according to the customary rights of daughters.
10 If he takes another wife, he must not diminish the first one's food, her clothing, or her marital rights.
11 If he does not provide her with these three things, then she will go out free, without paying money.
12 "Whoever strikes someone so that he dies must surely be put to death.
13 But if he does not do it with premeditation, but it happens by accident, then I will appoint for you a place where he may flee.
14 But if a man willfully attacks his neighbor to kill him cunningly, you will take him even from my altar that he may die.
15 "Whoever strikes his father or his mother must surely be put to death.
16 "Whoever kidnaps someone and sells him, or is caught still holding him, must surely be put to death.
17 "Whoever treats his father or his mother disgracefully must surely be put to death.
18 "If men fight, and one strikes his neighbor with a stone or with his fist and he does not die, but must remain in bed,
19 and then if he gets up and walks about outside on his staff, then the one who struck him is innocent, except he must pay for the injured person's loss of time and see to it that he is fully healed.
20 "If a man strikes his male servant or his female servant with a staff so that he or she dies as a result of the blow, he will surely be punished.
21 However, if the injured servant survives one or two days, the owner will not be punished, for he has suffered the loss.
22 "If men fight and hit a pregnant woman and her child is born prematurely, but there is no serious injury, he will surely be punished in accordance with what the woman's husband demands of him, and he will pay what the court decides.
23 But if there is serious injury, then you will give a life for a life,
24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,
25 burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise.
26 "If a man strikes the eye of his male servant or his female servant so that he destroys it, he will let the servant go free as compensation for the eye.
27 If he knocks out the tooth of his male servant or his female servant, he will let the servant go free as compensation for the tooth.
28 "If an ox gores a man or a woman so that either dies, then the ox must surely be stoned and its flesh must not be eaten, but the owner of the ox will be acquitted.
29 But if the ox had the habit of goring, and its owner was warned, and he did not take the necessary precautions, and then it killed a man or a woman, the ox must be stoned and the man must be put to death.
30 If a ransom is set for him, then he must pay the redemption for his life according to whatever amount was set for him.
31 If the ox gores a son or a daughter, the owner will be dealt with according to this rule.
32 If the ox gores a male servant or a female servant, the owner must pay thirty shekels of silver, and the ox must be stoned.
33 "If a man opens a pit or if a man digs a pit and does not cover it, and an ox or a donkey falls into it,
34 the owner of the pit must repay the loss. He must give money to its owner, and the dead animal will become his.
35 If the ox of one man injures the ox of his neighbor so that it dies, then they will sell the live ox and divide its proceeds, and they will also divide the dead ox.
36 Or if it is known that the ox had the habit of goring, and its owner did not take the necessary precautions, he must surely pay ox for ox, and the dead animal will become his.
1 Now these H428 are the judgments H4941 which H834 thou shalt set H7760 before H6440 them.
2 If H3588 thou buy H7069 a Hebrew H5680 servant, H5650 six H8337 years H8141 he shall serve: H5647 and in the seventh H7637 he shall go out H3318 free H2670 for nothing. H2600
3 If H518 he came in H935 by himself, H1610 he shall go out H3318 by himself: H1610 if H518 he H1931 were married H1167 H802 , then his wife H802 shall go out H3318 with H5973 him.
4 If H518 his master H113 have given H5414 him a wife, H802 and she have born H3205 him sons H1121 or H176 daughters; H1323 the wife H802 and her children H3206 shall be H1961 her master's H113 , and he H1931 shall go out H3318 by himself. H1610
5 And if H518 the servant H5650 shall plainly say H559 H559 , I love H157 H853 my master, H113 H853 my wife, H802 and my children; H1121 I will not H3808 go out H3318 free: H2670
6 Then his master H113 shall bring H5066 him unto H413 the judges; H430 he shall also bring H5066 him to H413 the door, H1817 or H176 unto H413 the door post; H4201 and his master H113 shall bore his ear through H7527 H853 H241 with an awl; H4836 and he shall serve H5647 him forever. H5769
7 And if H3588 a man H376 sell H4376 H853 his daughter H1323 to be a maidservant, H519 she shall not H3808 go out H3318 as the menservants H5650 do. H3318
8 If H518 she please not H7451 H5869 her master, H113 who H834 hath betrothed H3808 H3259 her to himself , then shall he let her be redeemed: H6299 to sell H4376 her unto a strange H5237 nation H5971 he shall have no H3808 power, H4910 seeing he hath dealt deceitfully H898 with her.
9 And if H518 he have betrothed H3259 her unto his son, H1121 he shall deal H6213 with her after the manner H4941 of daughters. H1323
10 If H518 he take H3947 him another H312 wife ; her food, H7607 her raiment, H3682 and her duty of marriage, H5772 shall he not H3808 diminish. H1639
11 And if H518 he do H6213 not H3808 these H428 three H7969 unto her , then shall she go out H3318 free H2600 without H369 money. H3701
12 He that smiteth H5221 a man, H376 so that he die, H4191 shall be surely put to death H4191 H4191 .
13 And if H834 a man lie not in wait H6658 H3808 , but God H430 deliver H579 him into his hand; H3027 then I will appoint H7760 thee a place H4725 whither H834 H8033 he shall flee. H5127
14 But if H3588 a man H376 come presumptuously H2102 upon H5921 his neighbor, H7453 to slay H2026 him with guile; H6195 thou shalt take H3947 him from H4480 H5973 mine altar, H4196 that he may die. H4191
15 And he that smiteth H5221 his father, H1 or his mother, H517 shall be surely put to death H4191 H4191 .
16 And he that stealeth H1589 a man, H376 and selleth H4376 him , or if he be found H4672 in his hand, H3027 he shall surely be put to death H4191 H4191 .
17 And he that curseth H7043 his father, H1 or his mother, H517 shall surely be put to death H4191 H4191 .
18 And if H3588 men H376 strive together, H7378 and one H376 smite H5221 H853 another H7453 with a stone, H68 or H176 with his fist, H106 and he die H4191 not, H3808 but keepeth H5307 his bed: H4904
19 If H518 he rise again, H6965 and walk H1980 abroad H2351 upon H5921 his staff, H4938 then shall he that smote H5221 him be quit: H5352 only H7535 he shall pay H5414 for the loss of his time, H7674 and shall cause him to be thoroughly healed H7495 H7495 .
20 And if H3588 a man H376 smite H5221 H853 his servant, H5650 or H176 H853 his maid, H519 with a rod, H7626 and he die H4191 under H8478 his hand; H3027 he shall be surely punished H5358 H5358 .
21 Notwithstanding H389 , if H518 he continue H5975 a day H3117 or H176 two, H3117 he shall not H3808 be punished: H5358 for H3588 he H1931 is his money. H3701
22 If H3588 men H376 strive, H5327 and hurt H5062 a woman H802 with child, H2030 so that her fruit H3206 depart H3318 from her , and yet no H3808 mischief H611 follow: H1961 he shall be surely punished H6064 H6064 , according as H834 the woman's H802 husband H1167 will lay H7896 upon H5921 him ; and he shall pay H5414 as the judges H6414 determine .
23 And if H518 any mischief H611 follow, H1961 then thou shalt give H5414 life H5315 for H8478 life, H5315
24 Eye H5869 for H8478 eye, H5869 tooth H8127 for H8478 tooth, H8127 hand H3027 for H8478 hand, H3027 foot H7272 for H8478 foot, H7272
25 Burning H3555 for H8478 burning, H3555 wound H6482 for H8478 wound, H6482 stripe H2250 for H8478 stripe. H2250
26 And if H3588 a man H376 smite H5221 H853 the eye H5869 of his servant, H5650 or H176 H853 the eye H5869 of his maid, H519 that it perish; H7843 he shall let him go H7971 free H2670 for his eye's sake H8478 H5869 .
27 And if H518 he smite out H5307 his manservant's H5650 tooth, H8127 or H176 his maidservant's H519 tooth; H8127 he shall let him go H7971 free H2670 for his tooth's sake H8478 H8127 .
28 If H3588 an ox H7794 gore H5055 H853 a man H376 or H176 H853 a woman, H802 that they die: H4191 then the ox H7794 shall be surely stoned H5619 H5619 , and H853 his flesh H1320 shall not H3808 be eaten; H398 but the owner H1167 of the ox H7794 shall be quit. H5355
29 But if H518 the ox H7794 were wont to push with his horn H5056 in time past H4480 H8543, H8032 and it hath been testified H5749 to his owner, H1167 and he hath not H3808 kept him in, H8104 but that he hath killed H4191 a man H376 or H176 a woman; H802 the ox H7794 shall be stoned, H5619 and his owner H1167 also H1571 shall be put to death. H4191
30 If H518 there be laid H7896 on H5921 him a sum of money, H3724 then he shall give H5414 for the ransom H6306 of his life H5315 whatsoever H3605 H834 is laid H7896 upon H5921 him.
31 Whether H176 he have gored H5055 a son, H1121 or H176 have gored H5055 a daughter, H1323 according to this H2088 judgment H4941 shall it be done H6213 unto him.
32 If H518 the ox H7794 shall push H5055 a manservant H5650 or H176 a maidservant; H519 he shall give H5414 unto their master H113 thirty H7970 shekels H8255 of silver, H3701 and the ox H7794 shall be stoned. H5619
33 And if H3588 a man H376 shall open H6605 a pit, H953 or H176 if H3588 a man H376 shall dig H3738 a pit, H953 and not H3808 cover H3680 it , and an ox H7794 or H176 an ass H2543 fall H5307 therein; H8033
34 The owner H1167 of the pit H953 shall make it good, H7999 and give H7725 money H3701 unto the owner H1167 of them ; and the dead H4191 beast shall be H1961 his.
35 And if H3588 one man's H376 ox H7794 hurt H5062 H853 another H7794 H7453 's , that he die; H4191 then they shall sell H4376 H853 the live H2416 ox, H7794 and divide H2673 H853 the money H3701 of it ; and H853 the dead H4191 ox also H1571 they shall divide. H2673
36 Or H176 if it be known H3045 that H3588 the ox H7794 hath used to push H5056 in time past H4480 H8543, H8032 and his owner H1167 hath not H3808 kept him in; H8104 he shall surely pay H7999 H7999 ox H7794 for H8478 ox; H7794 and the dead H4191 shall be H1961 his own.
